Are You in a Recession?

January 12, 2009

Chris and I were having a little photo contest between ourselves in downtown Colorado Springs over the Christmas break when we came across this sign.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the time, as well as feel bad for them, but I’ve come back to this image over and over again. It reflects a mindset and a feeling common to a lot of Americans these days. If you don’t eat/buy this product/hire me, I won’t either. On a philosophical-sociological level, this mindset reflects the very real inter-connectedness of individual lives and communities.

After doing a financial review during dishwashing duty last night, Chris commented that we need to stop the flow of money out of house and do our part to contribute to the recession. I’m all for frugality, but I disagree. When we can and when it’s wise for us, I am still going to hire service people and buy from the local shops downtown. We’re all looking at a tough road ahead, but if we stick together and make wise decisions, we can make it.

I read all these entries, and I wish I could give you a hug. I am so glad you were able to get everything on your computer back, and a new phone. Is it possible that the other one is store with Christmas things? Love you!

Aww, Mom, I miss you, too! Can’t wait to see you when Patchen is born! And, I have to admit, every time I walk out to the garage, I look for that phone. In the toolbox, behind shelves… I’m sure I’ll find it in a few months under something or behind something. So frustrating, but I am very thankful I was able to get a new one.

That sign is so cute! I forwarded a link to your post to my sister near Seattle because they own a bakery and have definitely felt the pinch in the economy! I’m with you though–I will still spend, but definitely more judiciously!

    Cheers!
