Ditching Plastic

If you’re like me, you probably have an unseemly store of balled up plastic bags hiding under your kitchen sink or in a pile in the garage. Although these little bags come in handy for collecting car trash or for use as a bathroom trash can liner, they tend to pile up quickly… more quickly than I can reuse them. So, I recently (and finally!) took my stash to my local Wal-Mart for recycling. The Green Guide Magazine recently featured an article touting Wal-Mart’s virtues as a plastic-bag recycler. Check out the follow-up story online at http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/Mag1/fulford.

More and more retail stores are ditching plastic bags or at least offering alternative reusable bags.  Whole Foods stopped offering plastic as of Earth Day 2008, and retailers like Ikea and Target have been offering reusable store bags for more than a year. Wal-Mart just recently joined the crew. You can usually purchase the store bags for anywhere from $1-$3.

I have a corduroy tote I use for the farmer’s market, as well as a couple of handy Target bags. If you’d like to purchase a couple of shopping totes or produce bags, here are a few cool and reasonably priced options:

Eco Bags

I really love the bag pictured above, as well as their produce bags and plan to order a few for my trips to Kroger and the Little Rock Farmer’s Market.
