DIY: Nursing Cover

September 20, 2010

When it comes to feeding Mackenzie, I don’t think I’ll ever be the model of bravery, or an activist for the breast-feeding “movement” that is so popular now. I’m a girl who likes to protect her modesty, but I also know that eventually, I’ll be in a position where I’m away from home, and I’ll need to feed Mackenzie.

I’m so thankful that someone invented nursing covers, and I’ve been so impressed by the adorable nursing covers that are available. You can find them in an enormous variety of prints and styles. As I was browsing, I noticed that the actual structure of a nursing cover is fairly simple, and I thought it would be fun to make one to match the nursing pillow and wet bag I had already planned to sew.

Then, I stumbled upon Little Birdie Secrets and this fantastic tutorial. The instructions are really easy to follow (although I left out the boning part – couldn’t find any locally). I made my nursing cover in a few hours one evening — not a difficult project at all! The pattern could be easily modified to make a simple apron, too.
