For a few years when I was growing up, we lived out in the country on my grandpa’s land in the Ozarks of Northwest Arkansas. Our neighbors leased a small plot of land from him and built a large garden, pond, and pasture. In the summer months, my family helped our neighbors with their garden harvest. Mostly, we picked pole beans. Lots and lots of pole beans. Our neighbors would then take the good beans to the local farmer’s market and sell them. Occasionally, we got to snack on one or two, and sometimes if the harvest was good, they sent a basket home with us. We also enjoyed picking and eating fresh wild blackberries and raspberries that grew along our one-third-mile-long driveway. We picked so many but rarely came home with enough for a pie.
There is something especially satisfying about picking your own food and enjoying it, even if you weren’t the one who grew it. This summer, Chris, Mackenzie, and I plan to take advantage of the local u-pick farms in Middle Tennessee. I started researching which ones were close enough to drive to with a toddler and still have enough time for picking. Here’s my short list of u-pick farms within a 45-minute drive from downtown Nashville, sorted by direction from Nashville, and then by drive time.
