Life

Anchor

May 6, 2008

What holds things together? In a world that is spinning so quickly, where the speed of time seems itself to accelerate exponentially with each passing year, it is easy to feel like things are spinning out of control. It’s like riding a merry-go-round. Thrilling at first, the faster and faster you spin, the greater the risk of getting thrown off. And God forbid that.

All good merry-go-riders know that the safest place to ride is in the center.

If you’ve ever watched a top spin, you have likely witnessed it spin victoriously on its axis for a time before toppling over. When the top is spinning, the physics of rotation keep it upright. However, eventually, the pull of gravity wins and pulls the top off its access and out of rotation.

The most important thing is for the center to be anchored and secure. If the center is anchored and stable, then the motion of the extremities is controlled and has meaning in relation to the spin of the axis. The speed of the motion loses its power of fear because it is anchored, and the foundation is secure.

To me, life is the same way. We can handle the speed, we can handle the spinning and constant motion, if and only if, our anchor is secure. The further we move away from our anchor, the less safe we are and the greater our risk of getting thrown off the ride.

Some thoughts from Scripture…

“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” – Colossians 1:17

“Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” – Hebrews 6:16-19

Yes, it is important to stay as near to the center as you can get.

It reminds me of the parable of the two houses– one built on a rock and the other on sand.

    Love you!

I hope today is going to be a good one!
