Going Green

New [to Me]

August 6, 2008

As many of you know, just in the last six months have I really begun focusing my energies on living a greener lifestyle and searching out the resources our community has to offer in this vein.

What I have discovered is that while the “going green” and living sustainably is somewhat new to me (I was very involved as a teenager and have been relatively MIA until now), there are many individuals and organizations who have been around for a long time, the true “Arkansas Originals” and starters of this grassroots movement toward change.

For example, today I spoke with Lisa Armstrong, founder of the website Holistic Arkansas. She started the site in 2005 and is very connected with resources across the state. If you haven’t heard of her, you should definitely check out her site. She has listed resources in over 90 categories and in nearly every county in the state!

I also recently discovered the organization Faulkner County Supporters of Sustainable Communities. They are very active in promoting alternative transportation in our county, as well as many other efforts. They have several important events this out. Check them out here.

If you know of groups or resources in our state, please comment and share! I’d love to hear about them and spread the word.

Dee, It’s Ali Spilman….. I just stumbled accross this post and wanted to let you know that I used to work for an alternative medicine Doctor in Conway. Every other friday “Locally Grown” would set up their pick up station for produce, grange poultry/eggs, and beef in our waiting room. I think you can find more info about them if you google. Also…. Dr. Betsy Hendricks is an amazing doctor! I got the privilege of working in her office. She works with a variety of people. Her focus is on chronic illnesses, children with autism. She is an MD who actually cares about healing a person and not puting a patch on the problem by just prescribing a RX. Here is her website (that desperately needs to be updated) I think it has a section that talks more about her practice, though. Most of it is for a store that she used to run out of her office, too. Anyways…. random…. hope all is well back in Conway!!
