23 Weeks

June 11, 2010

Yesterday afternoon Chris and I had our 23-week checkup. Mackenzie’s heartbeat is strong at 152 bpm. I can feel her moving all throughout the day now. Her kicks get stronger and stronger, and Chris has been able to feel her several times, too. It’s wonderful.

After the appointment, we went to Textile Fabrics and Meridian’s to look at fabric for Mackenzie’s room and new furniture for our house (we sign the lease Saturday morning – yay!). Chris totally went in a different direction at the fabric store than I expected him to, and the result is a fabric that is much more pink and girly and less modern than I originally planned for. It was a bit hard to let go of my expectations and to make a decision, but I bit the bullet and went for it. I realize that I get to feel the baby all throughout the day, and I’ll be able to bond with her earlier and in a different way than he will be able to. He has so many ideas for her room that I feel that I just need to let him go with it. This is a way for him to connect, and I think that is really important.

One bit of bad news from the appointment – the nurse-midwife confirmed that my staph infection is attempting to return. Apparently, pregnancy equates to a hugely depressed immune system, and staph will grab onto any weakness like that. She prescribed oral antibiotics that I need to pick up this morning. If it doesn’t clear up within the week, she said that we’ll have to hit it with “bigger drugs.” I don’t like the sound of that, but I do want this thing gone and done with. In a few weeks, she’ll refer me to a dermatologist who may be able to remove the cyst altogether without inflaming the area around it, which would mean no more staph infections ever. I am all for that.

In the meantime, for the next few days, anyway, I am not allowed to sit. You read that right. So my freelance work that involves spending hours in front of my computer — yeah, that’s gonna be tough. Thank goodness for a laptop. Can you code while laying down? I suppose I can work on logo design from a standing position, but it will probably have to happen in short spurts.

I can already tell my productivity is going to take a major hit over the next few days. Good thing tomorrow is Saturday. 🙂
