DIY: Nursing Pillow with Removable Cover

September 9, 2010

Now that Mackenzie’s nursery is finished, I’ve moved on to preparing for the less cute but very necessary aspects of having a baby in the house. One of the baby gear items I’ve heard recommended most is a nursing pillow – both for nursing and as a sleep support pillow.

I followed the pattern in Lotta Jansdotter’s book Simple Sewing for Baby to create a basic, washable nursing pillow. I used leftover white canvas fabric and standard poly fiber-fill. Then, I used the same pattern and added a zipper to create a washable cover.

I plan to sew a nursing cover and two wet bags from the same fabric. I’ll post pictures and a tutorial for the wet bags soon!

Thanks! I’ve been pushing hard to finish my list — probably too hard, but I’m glad, given the news from the doctor today!

i’d really like to make this…but your D.I.Y isn’t a real tutorial…can you please tell me how many yards of what kind of fabric, length of zipper and amount of stuffing you used. Pictures on how you attatched the zipper would be helpful for this “DIY tutorial” as well.

    Thanks immensly!!!

Thanks for your comment, Sarah! Unfortunately, this wasn’t meant to be a tutorial. At the time, I was really just beginning sewing, and I used Lotta Jansdotter’s pattern. It didn’t seem right to share it because it doesn’t belong to me; I really just wanted to show the final result. However, I do plan to make another one, and when I do, I’ll make a pattern and share it here. In the meantime, you might find Lott’s book Simple Sewing for Baby helpful. I really did.

Thank you so much for getting back to me! I really appreciate it! I think I can kind of figure it out,…no spare money for the book…it’ll just take a little time. Thanks for your reply!

No worries, Sarah! If you draw out a very wide U-shape — probably 24″ across — and make the ends of the U drawn together, almost like a wide-bottomed tear drop, you’ll be pretty close. The zipper was the tricky part — I added that because I wanted a pillow with a cover. If you need help or if you haven’t done a zipper before, let me know. Good luck!
